Jerry Piipponen
Sub-principal percussion, Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra"Samuli was the first teacher with who I deepened my skills on sound relations. How movement and touch correlate with the sound produced.
For every student he has, Samuli searches in an active manner the best ways to learn. He strives to develop both his students and himself in a versatile way. Samuli has determined and methodical ways to outline music. These ways supported my own progress as a musician - and still do." |
Jussi Markkanen
Sub-principal percussion, Turku Philharmonic Orchestra"I spent three years as a student of Samuli’s during my masters degree studies. With his help I managed to develop a lot of basic technique related to timpani playing. From these lessons I managed also to get a lot of tools to survive as a musician later on. We covered a lot of etudes and exercises but still always striving to make music as a primary goal.
Samuli has a great reservoir of knowledge that he is able to share to his students in a natural manner. One important thing I learned from him is a careful analysis of details behind notes. This affects my daily job as an orchestral musician a lot. Why things written are like they are and how does it impact the music played out. After this the final solution is easier to figure out. I liked Samuli's positive and encouraging style of teaching. He never wanted to sacrifice even an inch of quality at the same. His knowledge of repertoire was a great help to prepare for auditions. Samuli also manages to prepare his students mentally for auditions. I find this is essential for succeeding in the audition game." |

"Samuli was my teacher in Sibelius Academy in Finland for two years. During this time we worked on technique and sound, but we also focused on colours and small details. Samuli's teaching opened a new way of understanding music and timpani for me.
He has a huge teaching toolbox that makes possible that his teaching is personal. His teachings goes always according to the progress of the student. He also helped me with visualization in auditions - one of the prime reasons why I won my first audition in 2020.
I study now in the Orchestral Academy of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra."
